Mountain Ash Survey
Help track how mountain ash berries hold up through the winter, and which birds come to eat them: Cedar and Bohemian Waxwings, Pine and Evening Grosbeaks, chickadees and more.
How it works
- Find a mountain ash with (or recently with) berries. Yard, street, park or woods all count.
- Stand by the tree and fill in the survey on your phone: location, weather, how much of the tree still has berries and leaves, a berry count in three clumps, and any birds around.
- Come back to the same tree every week or two through the winter. After your first visit you get the tree's code and a link for next time.
What to bring
- A phone (for location and photos).
- A tape measure for the trunk, at 4.5 ft above the ground. Optional, first visit only.
- Binoculars help with birds and high berries.
